Dearest (G)Mother I am writing just to (Am)say I won’t be (C)home

There’s (D)something that I have to do and (C)I must (D)do a(G)lone(D)

They have (G)took me and they’ve put me in this (Am)lonely prison (C)cell

To(D)night my thoughts are with you as I (C)say my (D)last Fare(G)well

Chorus

So (D)say goodbye to Margaret, Mary (G)Bridget and Michál

I (C)have no words to (G)tell you how much I’ll (Em)miss you (D)all

And (Am)though I may not (D)show it you (G)know I’ve loved you well

So (C)in my final (G)letter I will (Am)bid my (D)last fare(G)well

Dearest (G)brother won’t you take good care of (Am)all the folks for (C)me

Go (D)home to Rathfarnam on the (C)day they (D)set you (G)free(D)

I was (G)happy when you stood by me in (Am)all that we’ve been (C)through

No (D)one has ever had so true a (C)brother (D)such as (G)you

Chorus

Dearest (G)mother it’s so very sad that (Am)now we have to (C)part

To (D)understand the reasons would (C)trouble (D)your poor (G)heart(D)

I have (G)told you since I was a boy it (Am)was my desti(C)ny

To (D)die a true brave soldier so that (C)one day (D)you’d be (G)free

Chorus

Alternative ending as used by Barleycorn:

...So (C)in my final (G)letter I will (C)bid (Am)my (D7)last (D)fare(G)well

This song  was written by the same men who wrote that famous song ''Grace'' about Joseph Mary Plunkett. This one is based upon the last letter Padraic Pearse sent to his mother before meeting his executioner. In the song Padraic Pearse mentions his brother Willie who was executed the following day 4th May 1916. Padraic never knew when writing that his brother was to be sentenced to death. Willie was killed simply because his name was Pearse. Willie was a sculpture by profession and was more involved in the running of St.Enda's School Rathfarnham Dublin which was founded by his brother Padraic that he was in the Irish volunteers. A beautiful song, well written by two of Ireland's finest songwriters. The guitar chords are by Marc Fahrbach. Well done Marc this is one I'm going to learn myself. A special mention must also go the the singer Derek McCormack from The Barleycorn who is no longer with us. Derek was one of the finest Ballad singers Ireland ever produced.
